THE TRUE ISLAM

The word Islam literally means ‘to submit’. It is complete submission to the fact that there is only One God who has created the entire universe. It means submitting to His commands and believing in His Prophets, Messengers and Imams which He has sent for the guidance and reformation of mankind. Such a believer who is completely submissive of the orders of God, obedient towards His Messengers and Imams and honors the rights of other people in the society is known as a Muslim.

The Infallible Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.), the 6th successor of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a) describes a Muslim as,

“A Muslim is the one by whose hands and tongue, others are safe.”

[Behaar al-Anwaar, vol. 75, pg. 51]

Islam, therefore, is a religion of peace, tranquility and harmony unlike what it is portrayed and perceived by people all over the world today. It is a grave misconception and an irony that most people today believe in Islam to be a religion of war and terrorism whereas in reality, it is completely against such thoughts. It is the selfish interests of certain so called religious extremist outfits and groups which claim to be the guardians of Islam. The fact of the matter is, their words, arguments and actions none of them are in accordance with Islamic teachings.

The Holy Quran says,

“Do not spread mischief in the land.”

[Surah Baqarah (2), verse 11]

The Holy Quran also says in Surah Maedah (5), verse 32, regarding the act of unjustly killing an innocent being and equaling it to a sin of killing entire humanity.

“…Whosoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though it kept alive all men.”

In order to understand what Islam is, one needs to learn from those personalities who were entrusted with the responsibility of spreading the Islam and the Message of God. The Prophets, Messengers & Imams are those representatives, who were appointed by God for the guidance of mankind and the reformation of the society. The lives of these representatives of God were only aimed at establishing peace among the people and removing the curtains of ignorance which blinded man’s vision. They were always prepared to even sacrifice their own lives in order to fulfill their aim and for the sake of Islam. When we talk about sacrifice, one such great personality who instantly comes to mind is Imam Husain (a.s.).
